Review: The Dresser, Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham

Yet long live the king. For even Stott's wonderful, bravura performance is outshone by Reece Shearsmith, as Norman, his dresser. Shearsmith has absorbed the pathos, inadequacy, and determination of this conflicted character. Ignored by Sir, he acts out

The League of Gentlemen

The League of Gentlemen Part sitcom, part sketch show, part 'Kitchen Sink', part 'Northern Gothic', The League of Gentlemen is one of British television's most innovative and enduring comedy series. Set in the northern town of Royston Vasey, the series introduced viewers to homicidal Local Shop keepers Tubbs and Edward, vindictive training officer Pauline, demonic butcher Hilary Briss, and the nightmarish circus owner Papa Lazarou. Such was the series' effect that the word 'local' would never seem the same again. The majority of these grotesque characters were played by Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, who created and wrote the series with Jeremy Dyson. In addition to creating a unique world, where the mundane collided with the macabre, the League showcased a...

Cold Hand in Mine

Aickman's 'strange stories' (his preferred term) are constructed immaculately, the neuroses of his characters painted in subtle shades. He builds dread by the steady accrual of realistic detail, until the reader realises that the protagonist is heading towards their doom as if in a dream. Cold Hand in Mine, first published in 1975, stands as one of Aickman's finest collections and contains eight tales including 'Pages from a Young Girl's Journal' which won the World Fantasy Award. 'He had the ability to invest the daylight world with all the terrors of the night, and specialised in subverting notions of safety and sunshine into something sinister and unforgiving.' Christopher Fowler, Independent

  2. The League of Gentlemen is a comedy show that divides opinion. A bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. But that doesn't worry one of its stars, Reece Shearsmith, who would much prefer that, to writing something that people can take or leave.
  3. Production photos have been released of Ken Stott, Reece Shearsmith, Selena Cadell and Harriet Thorpe in The Dresser by Sir Ronald Harwood which is currently on a brief UK Tour ahead of an extended run in London's West End at the Duke of York's

" Edward and Tubbs Edward Tattsyrup and Tulip "Tubbs" Tattsyrup, played by Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton respectively, are a married couple (as well as brother and sister) who are the proprietors of Royston Vasey's local shop (which they inherited from their mother and has apparently been in the Tattsyrup family for generations), located on the top of a hill some distance away from the town. Both have distinctly piggy noses (in live shows, the actors simply hold their noses up with tape). Despite being complete outsiders to most of the other action in the show, they have become, arguably, the most popular and identifiable characters.
