Personnel: Bing Crosby (vocals); Bing Crosby; Matty Matlock (clarinet); Abe Lincoln (trombone); Red Callender (bass guitar); Clancy Hayes (guitar); Dave Harris (tenor saxophone); Frank Beach, Bob Scobey (trumpet); Ralph Sutton (piano); Nick Fatool (drums). Audio Remasterer: Peter Cho. Liner Note Author: Will Friedwald. Recording information: Radio Recorders Annex Studio, Los Angeles, CA (02/19/1957/02/20/1957). Arranger: Matty Matlock. When this album was recorded in 1957, Bing Crosby was on his fourth decade as an American pop music icon. Nevertheless, he was still going strong and still had it in him to try something new and different. BING WITH A BEAT pairs Crosby with Bob Scobey's Frisco Jazz Band for a hefty helping of swinging standards with a strong Dixieland flavor. At once a novel idea as well as a return to his jazz roots, this session remains one of Crosby's most consistent albums and has long been a favorite among fans and collectors. It is easy to see why-the record resonates with a feeling of adventure that is sometimes lacking on Crosby's more typical pop recordings, and the contrast between his trademark laid-back phrasing and a swinging band makes for a heady mixture. From Paul Whiteman's Whispering, which dates back to the very beginning of Bing's career, to Mack the Knife, then a recent hit that Bing sings with a nod to Louis Armstrong, the album was clearly a fun one for Crosby to make. Decades later, it is still fun to hear.
Strategic Legal Writing
This is the inside story of the DeLorean saga written by a senior manager who worked with the company from beginning to end and saw it all. The short life of the DeLorean DMC-12 sports car – a vision of the future with its gullwing doors and stainless steel body – began after John DeLorean secured financial backing from the British government for his car-making venture in Northern Ireland. Four years and nearly 9,000 cars later the company went bust and DeLorean faced questions about fraud against the British taxpayer, and his big ally, Colin Chapman of Lotus, also drew scrutiny. As an insider’s account, this book contains a great deal of new information about the DeLorean scandal.
Many legal writing texts emphasize how one writes; this book is unique because it also focuses on why one writes. Every chapter challenges the reader to write to achieve a strategic objective. Each assignment has been carefully considered by the authors, and fully vetted to simulate the decision-making involved in the preparation of important legal writing, whether in a general counsel's office, a law office, a government attorney's office, or a judge's chambers. Simply put, the authors' approach is that effective legal writing does not exist in a vacuum. This book provides practical assignments that teach the student that the best legal writing is not an end in itself, but a means to a larger strategic objective.
