The Complete Book of 1970s Broadway Musicals

The 1970s was an exciting decade for musical theatre. Besides shows from legends Stephen Sondheim (Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, and Sweeney Todd) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita), old-fashioned musicals (Annie) and major revivals (No, No, Nanette) became hits. In addition to underappreciated shows like Over Here! and cult musicals such as The Grass Harp and Mack and Mabel, Broadway audiences were entertained by black musicals on the order of The Wiz and Raisin. In The Complete Book of 1970s Broadway Musicals, Dan Dietz examines in detail every musical that opened on Broadway during the 1970s. In addition to including every hit and flop that debuted during the decade, this book highlights revivals and personal-appearance revues with such performers as...

1953 Musical Film Promo Layout, "Invitation to the Dance" (3 pages)
Actor/dancer Gene Kelly (August 23, 1912 - February 2, 1996) played three roles in this unusual, little-remembered film musical, "Invitation to the Dance," which he also directed. While this three-page photo promo for the film was published in Tempo news magazine in 1953, the experimental film wasn't released until 1956. Kelly's roles included The Clown in 'Circus' / The Marine in 'Ring Around the Rosy' / Sinbad in 'Sinbad the Sailor'. He won a Golden Berlin Bear award at the 1956 Berlin International Film Festival. Composer André Previn had a small role in the film. The film didn't do well at the box office, bringing in far less than what it cost to produce. Film summary, via IMDb: This is a movie where three entirely different stories are told though dancing. Words are not used and the style of dancing is different for each part. Kelly is a clown in the 'Circus'; a Marine in 'Ring Around the Rosy'; and Sinbad in 'Sinbad the Sailor'. Photo caption (left): Music and...
