East Brainerd Community Theater puts its spin on 'The Odd Couple' - Chattanooga Times Free Press

East Brainerd Community Theater will put its spin on one of the standards of American theater this weekend, Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple. But don't expect things to get too modern in this classic comedy, which has been a pop-culture touchstone since it debuted on Broadway in 1965. "1965 is where we placed it," says director Maria Chattin-Carter. "The Odd Couple" centers on two mismatched roommates — the slovenly, easygoing Oscar Madison and the fastidious, uptight Felix Ungar. Oscar has just divorced his wife. Felix has just separated from his. The play opens with a group of guys assembling to play cards in Oscar's apartment. If the mess is any indication, it's no wonder that his wife left him. "When we open, there are clothes all over the place, newspapers thrown everywhere, papers — he's a sports journalist — scattered everywhere, food left out," Chattin-Carter says. "You still see the nice curtains on the wall and some of the nice things Oscar's wife left behind. But you also see Oscar's touch over the last six months. Late to arrive to the card game is the fussbudgety Felix, who seems depressed to the point of suicide. But as the action unfolds, Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the slob and the clean freak ultimately decide to room together. In the EBCT production, Justin Wahlne plays Oscar and Seth Brock is Felix. Chattin-Carter says she and the actors sat down before rehearsals to talk about what's going on with the two characters. "What they're going through is similar, but they're handling it differently," she says. com or 423-757-6281.
