The incredible story of the life and phenomenal career of one of the greatest players ever to wear a Maple Leafs uniform, told through stories and never-before-seen photographs. Darryl Sittler may well be best remembered for two of the most remarkable performances in the history of the National Hockey League. On February 7, 1976, he scored six goals and added four assists for an NHL record total of ten points in a game. That spring, he joined Maurice Richard in hockey history by recording five goals in one playoff game. He also scored one of the most famous goals in hockey history, the overtime goal against Czechoslovakia to win the 1976 Canada Cup. Now, #27 looks back at his incredible career and greatest moments on and off the ice. He writes about growing up in St. Jacobs, Ontario, his days in junior hockey with the London Knights, and his rookie year in 1970-71. Also included are his personal reflections on some of his greatest teammates (Lanny McDonald, Borje Salming, Ian Turnbull, and Mike Palmateer, to name a few) and his encounters with his greatest rivals (Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull, Brian Trottier, Bobby Clarke, Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden, and Larry Robinson). He recounts his childhood hockey heroes (waiting in the cold outside an arena in Kitchener for Bobby Hull's autograph), his years playing for Philadelphia and Detroit, his induction into the Hall of Fame, and deep devotion to his family. Full of great anecdotes from his personal and professional life, this is an inspiring, revealing book by a revered leader and legend in hockey history.

West Hartford, UConn Agree To Extend Property Signing To September - Hartford Courant

Town and UConn officials have agreed to extend the town's deadline to sign for the 58-acre UConn campus for a sixth time – it's now set for September 15. Additionally, town and UConn officials have scheduled a meeting with the state Department of... On April 25, West Hartford's town council voted to move forward with the purchase of the property for $1 million, negotiated down from the original $5 million purchase price. Last month, town staff met with DEEP to discuss the PCB issue at the campus and what process should be done to address those issues. West Hartford Town Manager Ronald Van Winkle has said DEEP officials said they expect a plan of action despite who owns the property. Last July, the town and UConn entered a purchase and sale agreement which originally gave the town until October 12, 2016 to conduct environmental testing and other inspections. In Orr's letter, he states that UConn officials have also met with DEEP separate of the town's meeting with DEEP. "UConn understands that DEEP has suggested to the Town that additional sampling be done of the sediment from the pond and catch basins near the social work and undergraduate buildings," Orr states in the letter. "UConn agrees that this sampling needs to be done, but we believe that it should be done in the context of an over approach developed jointly among DEEP, the Town and UConn. After the October 12, 2016 deadline was extended to December 11, 2016, additional deadlines were set for March 13, May 1, May 19 and the last on June 23. The next deadline is set for September 15.

  2. Under a succession plan established after Mayor Richard J. Daley died in office in 1976, the vice mayor would serve as interim mayor until someone could be chosen to fill out the remainder of the term. The vice mayor was Orr, who quickly ruled himself

Revelations of a Root
The Arabidopsis plant’s root structure, shown in a cross-section view, is helping to improve understanding of the rhizosphere, or plant root zone. Researchers believe learning more about the rhizosphere will help clarify environmental processes, and perhaps give rise to future climate and environmental solutions. Toward this goal, a rhizosphere research campaign was initiated at EMSL, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national scientific user facility located at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The effort has focused on the Arabidopsis plant’s management of carbon nutrients and subsequent impacts on the diversity of the rhizosphere. The campaign includes scientists from EMSL, PNNL, DOE’s Joint Genome Institute, Brookhaven National Laboratory, the University of Minnesota and the University of Missouri. The work is funded by DOE’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research. Team members: Ljiljana Paša-Tolić,...
Solutions Rooted in Knowledge
An intricately structured soil bacterium, less than a micron in size, makes its home on the root surface of an Arabidopsis plant. Much remains to be learned about the plant root zone—or rhizosphere—and its microbial communities and influence on environmental processes. A research campaign at EMSL, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national scientific user facility located at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, is offering insights. The campaign includes scientists from EMSL, PNNL, DOE’s Joint Genome Institute, Brookhaven National Laboratory, the University of Minnesota and the University of Missouri. The effort, funded by DOE’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research, is focused on understanding how the presence and distribution of carbon within the root zone impacts the diversity and function of the rhizosphere microbial community.
