(Old) Treasury Building: Spring Street - Melbourne 1870 - 2014
It is hard to imagine this magnificent building was designed by someone nineteen years of age. John James Clark arrived in Melbourne in 1852 on board an immigrant ship from Liverpool when he was just fourteen. With a flair and extraordinary talent in design and drawing, he was put to work in the Colonial Architect's office where he immediately designed the extensions to Melbourne's General Post Office. He later became a respected specialist in the design of prisons, asylums, town halls, courthouses and post offices. In five years he had proved himself so capable that he was awarded the job of designing the Melbourne Treasury. The gold rush of the 1850's proved a major headache for the authorities with inadequate storing facilities of the weekly convoys of bullion. In 1857, the government instructed the newly formed Public Works Department to design a building where the storage of gold could be centralized with maximum security and to provide offices for the Governor and senior...
Rostella: Lonsdale Street - Melbourne: 1881 - 1963
The next time you are around the law courts in William Street, take a short stroll down Lonsdale Street towards Queen Street and on your left you will come across two stone pillars that look remarkably out of place in front of the existing modern building. They are located just past the two 3-storey 19th century terrace buildings. Inscribed at the top of each pillar is the word 'Rostella'. These pillars were a part of the gated entrance to this magnificent home built in 1867 for one of Melbourne's most prominent surgeons, Sir Thomas Naghten FitzGerald. Sir Thomas was an honorary surgeon to the (Royal) Melbourne Hospital between 1860 and 1901 and afterwards a consulting surgeon also for the Austin, Queen Victoria and St Vincent hospitals. He also was the one who originally purchased the controversial oil painting 'Chloe'. Upon his death in 1908, the painting was bought by one Henry Figsby Young and for the past 100 or so years has been a part of the Prince's Bridge Hotel (Young and...
Baptist Church: Collins Street - Melbourne c.1870 - 2015
Tucked away nicely between Swanston and Russell streets, the Baptist Church building on Collins Street has been a part of the Melbourne landscape since 1862. It was designed by architects Reed and Barnes to seat at least 1000 people and constructed by John Holtom. An earlier structure had been built in 1845 but due to an expanding congregation, it was demolished to make way for the current building. The extent of any remnants of the 1845 structure is unknown. The little shop on the left was built in 1929 to provide additional revenue for the church. The Collins Street church is the oldest Baptist church in Victoria Today, the church is as committed to the people and welfare of the city as the day it began. It’s a place where you’ll always be welcome, no matter what your story or where you come from. robsp2p.tumblr.com/ www.flickr.com/photos/past2present/ Photos: Charles Nettleton (SLV) - Robert Smith (2015)
