Realisms in Contemporary Culture
Love Me or Kill Me is the first study of Sarah Kane, the most significant British dramatist in post-war theater. It covers all of Kane's major plays and productions, contains hitherto unpublished material and reviews, and looks at her continuing influence after her tragic early death. Locating the main dramatic sources and features of her work as well as centralizing her place within the 'new wave' of emergent British dramatists in the 1990's, Graham Saunders provides an introduction for those familiar and unfamiliar with her work.
‘Realism’ is a pervasive term in discussions of contemporary developments in literature and film. By drawing on different theories of realism, the authors explore how the term may be used as a helpful concept in order to analyse and evaluate current trends in cultural production and, in turn, how cultural production changes our understanding of what counts as ‘realism’. The volume deals with media-specific and national traditions of realism, thereby offering a transdisciplinary engagement with forms and socio-political functions of ‘realism’ in contemporary culture.
A Rutherglen man is hoping to be elected onto the board of the largest fan ownership scheme in British football. Rev Stuart McQuarrie is one of 23 candidates vying for a place on the board of Rangers First. The group already own 3. 5 per cent of Rangers having been set up in 2014 as a community interest company. Their 13,000 members are currently voting on who they want to represent them on the board at a time when the ‘Gers fans groups are considering merging into one. The 62 year old, who is the club’s chaplain, said he felt it was time for the fans to be united. He said: “This is an opportunity to have a more united and cohesive voice for Rangers supporters. “In the past few years, Rangers fans have been characterised at times by disagreements and arguments and if the last four years have shown us anything, it’s that we need to be united, there’s much more to be gained. “That doesn’t mean we need to agree on everything all the time, but the ting that unites us is the fact we are all Rangers supporters and we need to learn to work together. Rev McQuarrie, who is also the chaplain of Glasgow University and famously helped arrange Nelson Mandela’s visit to Glasgow in 1993, admits he is a supporter of the kind of fan-ownership model put forward by groups like Rangers First. “Football fans invest so much in terms of time, money, family life in their football club. “It’s not just about the game, it’s about identity and how you see yourself, sometimes what you believe in. ”. Voting for the board positions closes today, Wednesday, but Rev McQuarrie, a former Labour councillor in the Burgh, faces some tough... Rev McQuarrie said: “Hopefully I will bring the same traits I’ve brought to my public life, things like honesty and trustworthiness.
