Artist: Simon and Garfunkel. Title: Richard Cory. Source: CD: Collected Works (originally released on LP: Sounds Of Silence). Writer(s): Paul Simon. Year: 1966. My ultra-cool 9th-grade English teacher brought in a copy of Simon And Garfunkel's Sounds Of Silence album one day. As a class, we deconstructed the lyrics of two of the songs on that album: A Most Peculiar Man and Richard Cory. Whereas A Most Peculiar Man is about a lonely man who lives an isolated existence as an anonymouse resident of a boarding house, Richard Cory deals with a character who is at the center of society, known and envied by many. Artist: Hollies. Title: So Lonely. Source: 45 RPM single B side. Year: 1965. First off, a correction. So Lonely, the B side of the Hollies' first US top 40 hit, was not released in 1966, as I said on this week's show. Rather, it was included on the band's third Parlophone LP, titled The Hollies in the UK and Here Are The Hollies in the US. Both of these albums came out in late 1965, as did the Look Through Any Window single itself. So Lonely, like all the other Hollies' originals at the time, is credited to L. Ransford, which was actually the songwriting team of Allan Clarke, Tony Hicks and Graham Nash. Artist: Chocolate Watchband. Title: Psychedelic Trip. Source: 45 RPM single B side. Year: Recorded 1966, released 2012. Psychedelic Trip is essentially an early instrumental version of what would eventually become the title track for the Chocolate Watchband's debut album, No Way Out. Although Psychedelic Trip was a creation of the entire band, producer/manager Ed Cobb (the Ed Wood of psychedelic music) took sole writing credit for the song No Way Out. Artist: Beatles. Title: Love You To. Source: British import LP: Revolver. Writer(s): George Harrison. Label: Parlophone/EMI. Year: 1966. Following the release of Rubber Soul in December of 1965, Beatle George Harrison began to make a serious effort to learn to play the Sitar, studying under the master, Ravi Shankar. Along with the instrument itself, Harrison studied Eastern forms of music. His first song written in the modal form favored by Indian composers was Love You To, from the Revolver album. The recording also features Indian percussion instruments and suitably spiritual lyrics. Artist: Beatles. Title: She Said She Said. Source: CD: Revolver. Writer(s): Lennon/McCartney. Year: 1966. The last song to be recorded for the Beatles' Revolver album was She Said She Said, a John Lennon song inspired by an acid trip taken by members of the band (with the exception of Paul McCartney) during a break from touring in August... Instead, they invited several people, including the original Byrds and actor Peter Fonda, to come over and hang out with them. At some point, Fonda brought up the fact that he had nearly died as a child from an accidental gunshot wound, and used the phrase "I know what it's like to be dead. " The song itself took nine hours to record and mix, and is one of the few Beatle tracks that does not have Paul McCartney on it (George Harrison played bass). Perhaps not all that coincidentally, Fonda himself would star in a Roger Corman film called The Trip (written by Jack Nicholson and co-starring Dennis Hopper) the following year. Artist: Beatles. Title: Taxman. Source: British import LP: Revolver. Writer(s): George Harrison. Label: Parlophone/EMI. Year: 1966. The Beatles' 1966 LP Revolver was a major step forward, particularly for guitarist George Harrison, who for the first time had three of his own compositions on an album. Making it even sweeter was the fact that one of these, Taxman, was chosen to lead off the album itself. Although Harrison is usually considered the band's lead guitarist, the solo in Taxman is actually performed by Paul McCartney, whose own style had a harder edge (and considerably less finesse) than Harrison's. In a bit of a turnaround, Harrison plays bass on the track. Artist: Bob Dylan. Title: Just Like A Woman. Source: CD: Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits (originally released on LP: Blonde On Blonde). Writer(s): Bob Dylan.
