Traces the life of the often controversial but always popular singer.
Whereas other books about Madonna have been based on previously published material, this biography is the result of fifteen years of exclusive interviews with people who are speaking publicly for the first time, including close friends, business associates and even family members. Acclaimed biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli has also interviewed the star herself on numerous occasions and he draws on these first-hand experiences to bring Madonna to life as not merely a tabloid delight, but as a flesh-and-blood woman with human foibles and weaknesses, as well as great strengths and ambitions. Newly updated and published to celebrate Madonna's fiftieth birthday, this paperback edition covers the last six years in the star's life, including her self-imposed exile from America and adoption...
When Madonna needed to hire background dancers for her "Blond Ambition" tour in 1990, this was how the posting read: "Open audition for FIERCE male dancers who know the meaning of troop style, beat boy and vogue. That tour would be immortalized in "Madonna: Truth or Dare," equal parts concert film and a behind-the-scenes look at life on the road with her coterie of seven dancers, who appeared to be a closely bonded group. Carlton Wilborn, a former Hubbard Street dancer born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, was one of them. Fame also complicated their lives — for some, high-end parties gave way to addictions and financial straits. For Gabriel Trupin, who was not openly gay at the time, it felt like betrayal when Madonna chose to include footage of him in a passionate kiss with fellow dancer Salim Gauwloos during a game of Truth or Dare. In "Strike a Pose," Gauwloos explains the tension: The original movie was the "backstage reality of what was going on on the tour. But then there was a whole other backstage, ya know, that you didn't get to see — and that obviously none of us were ready to talk about. He's referring to the fact that at the time, three of the dancers (including himself and Wilborn) were HIV-positive and each kept that status under wraps — even from one another. The virus would ultimately claim Trupin, who died in 1995. He is the only dancer missing from the reunion. Madonna is also not part of "Strike a Pose" (from Amsterdam-based filmmakers Ester Gould and Reijer Zwaan) and the documentary, at least according to Wilborn, omits an anecdote or two he shared that the singer would not find flattering. People, especially pop stars, are complicated, and it would have been nice to get a more nuanced portrait of how the men felt about her (good and bad) while they were on tour. But the documentary is especially good at reintroducing the men to audiences who remember them from "Truth or Dare," and fleshing out their lives in the years since. They are — and always have been — more than Madonna's supporting players, but also men who have experienced their own ups and downs. Q: Was there something unique about the collection of personalities in the dance corps on that tour. A: They were about 18 years old and this was the first big thing they'd ever really done. It's interesting, even when we do interviews now for "Strike a Pose," the guys talk about the super family bond thing we had — and I never viewed it like that, to be really honest. Q: Did you stay in touch after the tour ended. When the filmmakers reached out to us for "Strike a Pose," I had become friends with Kevin (Stea), I would work on a project with him or he would work on a project with me, but we weren't always hanging out. Oliver (Crumes) and Jose (Gutierez) and Salim — "Slam" (his nickname) — I hadn't seen them or talked to them since the job. And part of the reason that I didn't stay in touch with them is that I didn't really like the guys when we were on the road. I didn't really respect most of them. Kevin's always been solid, he was a very clean guy when we were on the road, he wasn't extra wild or extra crazy. Which was different from Jose, Luis, Slam, Oliver — they were all just too much for me. Q: The way both movies frame it, there was an intense bond with this group. So it's surprising to hear you say you weren't really connected with the other guys. A: The whole family thing — that Madonna was the mother figure to all of us — that was a situation that she spun so that she could be seen in a different way for her own brand. Young boys that needed that thing ran with it. I did not. (Watch the revelant clip from "Truth or Dare" here. I was not hanging out with the guys that much on the road. I hung out with Niki Haris (one of Madonna's backup singers) and some people from the crew. Madonna made it appear that she collected us and made this kumbaya scenario. I never bought into it, but (for the film) I played like I was buying into it. And I know that one of the reasons that I was the only one that got invited back to do her next tour, and the reason I stayed in her camp for the next eight or nine... And everything I have said to you I have literally said to the guys' faces and we laugh about it. They don't take any offense to it now because.
