Even those in the press tent cheered when Palmer, a month shy of 60, rolled in a 10-footer on the 15th hole that tied him for the lead at 6-under. Arnie’s Army swelled throughout the back nine, growing eventually to a boisterous 3,000. “They got excited and they got me excited. “I thought I might shoot 65. ”. From then through 2002, we saw Palmer a lot in the Midlands. He and his team of architects opened three courses — Dakota Dunes near Sioux City, Iowa, in 1991. Players Club at Deer Creek in northwest Omaha in 2000. and ArborLinks at Nebraska City in 2002. He played three exhibitions at Shadow Ridge, the... the second in 2000 with Gary Player. and the last in 2001 with Player, Lee Trevino and Chi Chi Rodriguez. Palmer’s first Nebraska visit was to Hillcrest Country Club in Lincoln in 1963, when he shot 68 to beat Player by two. He played three exhibitions in Omaha between 1971 and 1977. In 1971 at Oak Hills with club pros John Frillman and Jerry Dugan and amateur Bob Astleford, he shot 37 in a rain-shortened event. And in 1977 at Omaha Country Club, with amateurs Orville Olson, Harold Andersen, D. J. Witherspoon, Earle Gardner, Dr. Stan Truhlsen and Jack MacAllister getting three holes apiece with him, he shot 2-under 34 on the back nine. For our Midlands Golf special section last April, several Midlands tour pros past and present shared stories involving Palmer. Jim White of Lincoln said he played a practice round with him at Valhalla in Kentucky in 2004, Palmer’s last Senior PGA Championship. Sieckmann said Palmer once invited him to his birthday gathering at Bay Hill near Orlando, Florida. And Mike Schuchart of Lincoln remembered at a PGA Championship waiting for a restroom stall to open up, “and out came Arnold Palmer. I said ‘Hi, Mr. Palmer,’ and went in. So I got to sit on the throne of the King. “He was walking around the room with a photographer and an assistant, and he would spend no more than two and a half or three and a half minutes with your group, but the time he spent with you, you felt there was nobody else in the room. “Jack told me what we had was nice property, but (said), ‘I build the course anywhere I want to on it and you can fit the housing lots around it,’ “ Livingston said, “versus Arnold, who knew what housing had brought to the golf business. He said to go ahead and lay out the real estate, slot the holes where you see them and we’ll work with that. “I thought it best as a par-5, especially as a finishing hole, and somehow I got the courage up. I said that to Arnie, with voice shaking, and he replied that it’s not long enough. I said, ‘On the other side of Deer Creek, there is a very nice meadow. ’ He gets out of the truck, down through the weeds and grass, walks around for about five minutes, measuring it off with strides.
