Atascocita edges Lamar to advance to state quarterfinals -

Atascocita has built its recent success behind its offense, scoring in bunches to the tune of 50 points or more five times this season while twice reaching the 70-point threshold. But when it mattered Friday in the Division I-6A regional semifinals, it wasn't the Eagles offense. It was the defense – specifically Alex Morris – that sent Atascocita to the state quarterfinals for a second straight season. Morris intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 46 yards for the go-ahead touchdown, and a minute later, recovered a fumble that sealed Atascocita's 28-27 win over Lamar at NRG. "I just happened to be in the right place at the right time," Morris said. There's a lot of things going on. I just have to thank my team, thank my family, thank God. Atascocita (11-1) will meet North Shore (12-1) at 7:30 p. m. next Friday back in NRG for a trip to the state semifinals. 7, with North Shore holding off the Eagles 31-21. "Lost to them the first time but we get to come back and redeem ourselves," Atascocita quarterback Daveon Boyd said. Lamar twice held a two-score lead in the second half. What could have been rings louder with missed opportunities in the first half for the Texans coupled with the mistakes down the stretch. "We never should have been in that situation," Lamar head coach Tom Nolen said. Running back Ta'Zhawn Henry was stripped just before crossing the goal line at the end of the first quarter. Another touchdown was erased on a holding penalty. Three plays later, DeMarius Brooks blocked a 35-yard field goal try. Henry finished with 235 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Missing those points loomed large as Lamar's lead was just six points in the final three minutes. Tralan Hutchinson tipped a third-down pass and Morris was there, catching the ball and returning for the tying score. David Heaton made it 28-27 with the extra point. "Just reaction," Morris said. "I would've stuck froze but God told me to go get it. So I went and got it. ". On Lamar's ensuing drive, Kase Rogers was stripped fighting for extra yardage on third down. And there was Morris, recovering the fumble. "That's effort," Atascocita head coach Craig Stump said. "There's probably five plays, they made some, too. "We needed a stop whether they punted – you don't count on a pick six or anything like that. We just count on a stop and a punt, get the ball back. And we went out and held them in the end. The comeback erased a slow start for the Eagles, who did lead 7-0 early behind the first of two Boyd touchdown passes. They punted three times in the first half and had another drive end on an interception. "We had a lot of bad calls, bad things toward us, but our offense stuck it out," Morris said. "They kept their heads up. Finished some drives.
