Stephen Hawking Says Life on Earth Has an Expiration Date

It's been a rough year for life on Earth. The Arctic is a staggering 36 degrees hotter than it should be, we've had some of the largest storms on record (in part fueled by rising global temperatures), and we've hit 400 parts per million global carbon

Stephen Hawking

Presents the life and accomplishments of the English scientist, who, despite suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease, has become a renowned cosmologist whose theory of black holes has had a profound influence on the modern study of the universe.

The Nature of Space and Time

Einstein said that the most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible. But was he right? Can the quantum theory of fields and Einstein’s general theory of relativity, the two most accurate and successful theories in all of physics, be united into a single quantum theory of gravity? Can quantum and cosmos ever be combined? In The Nature of Space and Time, two of the world’s most famous physicists—Stephen Hawking (A Brief History of Time) and Roger Penrose (The Road to Reality)—debate these questions. The authors outline how their positions have further diverged on a number of key issues, including the spatial geometry of the universe, inflationary versus cyclic theories of the cosmos, and the black-hole information-loss paradox. Though much progress has been...

Stephen Hawking Says Life on Earth Has an Expiration Date - Geek

It’s been a rough year for life on Earth. The Arctic is a staggering 36 degrees hotter than it should be, we’ve had some of the largest storms on record (in part fueled by rising global temperatures), and we’ve hit 400 parts per million global carbon dioxide levels — long considered the... You could be forgiven, then, for thinking Earth’s days are numbered. While giving a lecture at Oxford last week, Stephen Hawking said that he expects disaster in the next few thousand years. “Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low,” he said, “it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next 1,000 or 10,000 years. Hawking has long believed that humanity needs to become a multi-planet species, suggesting that the rarity of intelligent life and the distinct technological ability we possess gives us a moral obligation to protect ourselves and others from... Hawking believes that we should avoid developing AI, proliferating nuclear weapons, and that humanity must start working now to mitigate the potential damage caused by climate change. If left unchecked, Hawking thinks that any number of these developments could potentially destroy life as we know it. “[But] by that time,” Hawking added, “we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not... With all this and the expectation that President-Elect Trump will fight any efforts to stop climate change tooth and nail, the Earth has some rough years ahead. Even so, Hawking is hopeful. “Our picture of the universe has changed a great deal in the last 50 years, and I am happy if I have made a small contribution,” he said, according to The Independent. “The fact that we humans, who are ourselves mere fundamental particles of nature, have been able to come this close to understanding the laws that govern us and the universe is certainly a triumph. With billionaires like Elon Musk inspired to help protect humanity through the progression of tech, Hawking says that looking to the stars and believing in the majesty of the universe and the strength of the human spirit is more important than ever. “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, wonder about what makes the universe exist. However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up. ”.

'The Old And The Wise'
The nice thing about shooting star-trails and sitting around for hours sometimes, is the fact you don't have to be charging around a mountain or beach chasing the light, as fun as that can be too... Instead once your set-up and everythings rolling, you've got time to kick back and look at the stars and everything going on above you. I even got to watch a great moonrise too! Tonight I cheated a bit, and instead took the iPad and watched 'Hawking', the new dvd documentary about Prof Stephen Hawking, such an inspirational guy... Facebook / Google+ / Twitter

Based on works and ideas of my beluved mdarkbyte (Monika) and me and additionaly based on some random that sometimes happens in life (especially if you play around enough with things) The Vision is, having a small wireless Display-Only Device, that sits like a windshield on the eye. It is connectable to any other device that is able to send displayable information within the internet of things - augmenting reality in a user customizable manner. If usable as an input device this could probably work with the same technique Stephen hawking is using for his (Speech-) Computer.
