BUOYANT SEASIDERS: Three successive big wins in the Devon & Exeter League Division, allied to Saturday’s magnificent 2-1 East Devon Senior Cup win over Premier side Heavitee United, have seen Lyme Regis hit a rich vein of form. Lyme Regis 2 Heavitree Utd 1 (aet) East Devon Senior Cup – Round Two. THERE was a classic encounter at the Davey Fort as Lyme Regis locked horns with Premier Division outfit Heavitree United with a quarter final place at Newtown in the quarter-final of the East Devon Senior Cup up for grabs. The first action of an enthralling match came as early as the third minute. A Heavitree shot came back off the foot of the post and the rebound was blocked on the line by the Seasiders defenders and keeper Will Meech on three occasions in a frantic period of pinball play in the Lyme six-yard box. Lyme’s first chance came three minutes later when Chris Herbst played the ball inside the full back for winger Cody Bowditch to surge onto. But the teenager’s first touch was a little too heavy and visiting keeper Chris Govier smothered the danger. Next up it was Rob Fellingham who went close with a rising drive from the edge of the area and smashed against the underside of the bar. Lyme appealed that the ball had crossed the line, but the ball was travelling at such speed it was impossible to tell with the naked. Play switched back to the other end and ‘The Heavies’ went desparately close when Steve Batey worked wonders to stretch and keep the ball out with a super goal line block. The deadline should have been broken in the 21st minute when Herbst dug out a cross from wide on the right to find centre forward Rhys Hayter unmarked six yards out but his volley cleared the crossbar. Hayter went even closer on the half hour with a superb lob over the advancing Govier which bounced off the angle of crossbar and post. Batey’s long throw in’s caused problem in the Heavitree six yard box all afternoon and Dan Baggs, employed in a centre-back role as cover for the unavailable Dom Rowe, got his head on one but Govier scurried across his line to hack the ball clear... Bowditch and substitute Julien Simier both then went close before the vistors enjoyed their best period of the match and appeared likely to snatch the win. But Lyme almost snatched it in the last minute when they struck the woodwork for the fourth time. Batey this time unlucky with a strong header from a cross from substitute Tristan Gale. The deadlock was finally broken in the gathering darkness two minutes into extra time when Darren Lock cut in from the left wing on to his right foot before unleashing a fierce shot that a desperate defender got his head to on the goal line but... The winner came seven minutes later when Fellingham clipped in a cross-come-shot that deceived Govier and dropped over his head and into the far corner. Heavitree pulled one back two minutes from time when Kieren Daniels, another Lyme substitute, could only divert a cross into his own net. Lyme should have had a third when they broke away after defending a corner and Gale weaved past two defenders but, with keeper Govier stranded upfield, shot wide with the goal gaping.
