LANCASTER - Running for Lancaster city council seems to run in the Bobbitt family. This just makes my day," Amber Bobbitt said after accepting the nomination to run for city council. Fairfield County Democrats were left to fill an at-large Lancaster city council seat after the previous nominee, Greg Russell, was nominated to run for Lancaster mayoral race in November. Russell accepted that nomination in March. The meeting Wednesday evening at the party's headquarters, 118 N. Columbus St. , began with a moment of silence for the death of Betty (Reid) Arent. The mother of first ward councilwoman Melody Bobbitt and grandmother of the evening's nominee Amber, Arent owned a grocery store for 30 years on Cedar Hill Road and was a member of city council in the 1980s. She also owns Independence Hall. Before the death of her grandmother earlier Wednesday, Amber Bobbitt said she had prepared a speech. Though a short, passionate and tear-laden statement, she asked the executive committee to select her, but not because of the passing of her grandmother. Bobbitt said she helps Lancaster residents find jobs through her everyday work at a temp agency, and wants to continue to help the city. "My strength now is coming from my grandmother," she said. "I am so thankful she is watching over me. ". Bobbitt recalled growing up in the Democratic party, passing out literature, walking in parades, knocking on doors and staying late at the party's headquarters waiting for election results. "My grandmother's been in politics for as long as I remember," she said. She said running is part of her legacy. Bobbitt said her grandmother was still on city council when her mother first ran, and her mother was pregnant with her when she lost that race. Melody Bobbitt said her daughter's nomination is bittersweet. "I'm just thrilled that she can be a leader for the Democratic party," she said. And the 28-year-old said that as a millennial, Amber wants to move the party forward. "I want to step up. We need someone like me to step up and move this party on. I will fight for this Democratic party every day of my life. I just want your support," Bobbitt said. Bobbitt said she thought long and hard about running and earned the nomination on her own merit. She didn't want to hurt her mother's campaign, even though Melody is running unopposed this November. Melody said that she has talked her daughter out of running before because she was unsure how the citizens of Lancaster would see it. . Still, when Melody ran, her mother was on city council, and they faced no backlash at the time. "I hope people see it as a positive," Amber said. Through her grandmother and mother, she's seen how city council works firsthand and feels prepared. "I've wanted to run for a long time," Amber said. The executive committee vetted both of those interested in the open seat, Bobbitt and Diane Wogan Burnside, before Wednesday evening.
