A Hard World

In 2015, Booklist observed, “the arrival of Hauser’s annual boxing review is akin to Christmas morning for fight fans. Nobody knows a sport any better than Hauser knows boxing.” Each year, readers, writers, and critics alike look forward to Thomas Hauser’s annual collection of articles about the contemporary boxing scene. He’s one of the last real champions of boxing and one of the very best who has ever written about the sport. A Hard World continues this tradition of excellence with dressing-room reports from big fights like Canelo Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto, a behind-the-scenes look at Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, and a foray into the world of mixed martial arts for a compelling portrait of Ronda Rousey. Most importantly, this new collection contains Hauser’s groundbreaking...

Stalemate for Logan Paul and KSI in hyped YouTube boxing match - The Guardian

The boxing match between YouTubers KSI and Logan Paul was set to be, at least according to the hype, “ the biggest event in internet history ”. But in the end, it may have all been the prequel to another event, as the main fight ended in a draw... Online, the fight was watched by millions, both on the official pay-per-view YouTube channel, and on bootleg livestreams on other platforms. Neither of the men are professional boxers, having earned their fame for the videos they post on YouTube. KSI, real name Olajide William “JJ” Olatunji, has more than 19 million subscribers. He initially shot to internet fame with videos of him playing Fifa videogames. Logan Paul was one of the breakout stars from Vine, a now defunct social media app on which users posted humorous six-second videos. In January, 23-year-old Paul posted a video showing the body of an apparent suicide victim , while KSI, 25, was accused of making sexist comments in his earlier videos. Appropriately enough, the boxing event too was contentious. The British Boxing Board of Control put out a statement ahead of the match distancing itself from the event: “Neither individual is licensed by the BBBBofC and the BBBofC does not participate in such events. Among the fans who made it to the arena were 22-year-olds Luke Robinson and Laura Busby, both from Scunthorpe. “I’ve never been to a boxing match before, but we’re massive KSI fans, so we thought we’d come,” said Busby. “It’s a really big deal for KSI,” said Robinson. “It’s not just a boxing match – it’s personal. The encounter in the ring seemed to be important to Paul too. Referring to the uproar over the incident in January, he thanked KSI and said: “You saved my career. The match had all the trappings of a professional boxing event, from the dramatic walkouts to the trash talk. Renowned ring announcer Michael Buffer even announced the main card with his trademark: “Let’s get ready to rrrrrumble. This is the second time two YouTubers have fought in a white-collar match, in a phenomenon that aims to monetise online feuds between internet celebrities. Over the last few months, KSI and Paul have been curating the drama of their feud through social media. But after six evenly fought rounds, the judges scored a draw – meaning the drama will be extended to a rematch already scheduled for February. Interviewed after the fight, KSI said: “Let’s do that again, that was fun. ” Paul, too, seemed to have enjoyed the experience: “I think it’s what the people want. What happened happened. It’s unclear exactly how much money the participants will make, but between livestreams, ticket sales, merchandise and the promise of a repeat next year, it’s likely to be a small fortune.

  2. In the words of Bruce Buffer: “Iiiiiiiiiittts TIIIIIIIIIIIIMMMEE” or Michael Buffer: “Let's get ready to RUMMMMBLE!” Or according to Marvin Gaye: “Let's get it on.” Pick your anthem for tomorrow. I'm going to go with Joe Martinez's “The teams are ready

GAF L17 New Carver Lomo 3
New Carver Apartments, Michael Maltzen Architecture, 2009. Nearly a mile from the heart of Skid Row, the project’s 97 units provide permanent housing for formerly homeless elderly and disabled residents, a place for solace, support, and individual growth in the face of the city’s chronic homeless problem. By incorporating communal spaces– kitchens, dining areas, gathering spaces and gardens –into the Carver’s raised form, as well as medical and social services support facilities into the plinth beneath, the project encourages its residents to reconnect with each other and the city beyond. The Carver’s six-story circular form emerges from the path of the Santa Monica Freeway as it traces the site’s southern edge, its spiraling shape defining a private outdoor courtyard at the building’s center which provides each unit with natural lighting and views in all directions. Confronted with a significant level of ambient noise from passing automobiles, the form creates a sound buffer by...

King Matthias I, Matthias Fountain (Mátyás kútja), Buda
Alajos Stróbl, 1904 vanderkrogt.net/statues/object.php?webpage=ST&record=... Matthias Corvinus, also called Matthias I (Hungarian: Hunyadi Mátyás, Croatian: Matija Korvin, Romanian: Matia Corvin, Slovak: Matej Korvín, Czech: Matyáš Korvín; 23 February 1443 – 6 April 1490), was King of Hungary and Croatia from 1458 to 1490. After conducting several military campaigns, he was elected King of Bohemia in 1469 and adopted the title Duke of Austria in 1487. He was the son of John Hunyadi, Regent of Hungary, who died in 1456. In 1457, Matthias was imprisoned along with his older brother, Ladislaus Hunyadi, on the orders of King Ladislaus V of Hungary. Ladislaus Hunyadi was executed, causing a rebellion that forced King Ladislaus to flee Hungary. After the King died unexpectedly, Matthias's uncle Michael Szilágyi persuaded the Estates to unanimously proclaim Matthias king on 24 January 1458. He began his rule under his uncle's guardianship, but he took effective control of government...
