Oliver Lake Quintet: Oliver Lake (alto saxophone); Jay Hoggard (vibraphone); Geri Allen (piano); Belden Bullock (acoustic bass); Cecil Brooks III (drums). Recorded at Tedesco Studio, Paramus, New Jersey on March 4, 1997. Includes liner notes by Oliver Lake. Personnel: Oliver Lake (alto saxophone); Geri Allen (piano); Jay Hoggard (vibraphone); Belden Bullock (acoustic bass); Cecil Brooks III (drums). Liner Note Author: Oliver Lake. Recording information: Tedesco Studios, Paramus, NJ (03/04/1997). Photographer: Christopher Drukker. Talkin' Stick puts the versatile Oliver Lake into what could pass for a conventional hard bop quintet. However, with Lake's full-throated alto as the primary voice, there's little that's business-as-usual about this date. The session explores some in-the-pocket grooves mostly by the leader, with a couple felicitous contributions by Julius Hemphill (Hard Blues) and Curtis Clark (Only if You Live There). Clark's piece is a real ear-catcher, with a playful, toy piano-like quality that Lake abstracts and broadens in a typically ferocious solo. Lake's own compositions include the opening waltz and the African-flavored Masaai Moves, which gets a more extended reading than on Lake's string project recording, Movement, Turns & Switches. Underneath, drummer Cecil Brooks III and Belden Bullock, Lake's regular bassist, maintain the groove. Geri Allen and vibraharpist Jay Hoggard provide trenchant, complementary solos. The session goes to prove that regardless of the setting, Lake's sound remains among the most distinctive in jazz. ~ David Dupont

The Charlatans U.K. include: Tim Burgess, Martin Blunt, Jon Brookes, Mark Collins, Robert Collins. Producers include: Chris Nagle, David M. Allen, Hugh Jones, Steve Hillage, Dave Charles. Recorded between 1990 and 1997. Audio Mixer: Will Gosling. Audio Remixer: Van Basten. Recording information: 1990-1997. Photographer: Dominic Davies. The Charlatans UK have always been the precious secret of American Brit-pop fans, an institution in their own homeland - and this album celebrates the band's B-sides from 1990-1997. With those dates and this album, the listener will travel through baggy, Hammond-laden shoegazer swirls, Brit-pop, and the electronic crossover remix all with the thread of Tim Burgess' sinewy verses and airy chorus melodies (and shakers/tambourines, of course). As an addendum to Melting Pot, the best-of album on Beggars Banquet in 1998, Songs From the Other Side serves as part of the re-evaluation of Brit-pop's legacy in modern music - a return to rock sensibilities with a new psychedelic, dance-driven tinge that has inspired bands like Doves, B.R.M.C, Starsailor, and many below-the-radar indie bands. Stir It Up and Subterranean recall the Stone Roses' dreaminess and Oasis' panache and serve as highlights to an album of hereto underlit material. Remixes by Van Basten (Feel Flows) and the Chemical Brothers (Nine Acre Dust) do little to reshape the bravado of the band, instead milling in clichd circles. As the album is arranged chronologically, these dance tracks sandwich material from their 1994 comeback period and the latter track leads listeners into a few misguided attempts at becoming Brit electronica. Hardly a starting point for this long-running group, Songs From the Other Side is either an offering to diehards until the next album or a coupling for the reminiscent Anglophile remembering his/her undergrad days at the Brit-pop dance night. ~ Daphne Carr
