Once runway director Chris Kaufman, choreographer Chad Broskey and Heyman Talent director Kathy Campbell and I nail down our lineup, the models and I are off on a crazy schedule of fittings and rehearsals that will lead us into the dressing rooms... But on Tuesday evening, it wasn't about the dresses, hats, jumpsuits and jackets that will eventually be making guest appearances in my dreams – it was all about the models we would select to bring the clothes to life. For those of you who've never seen a model casting before, I thought I'd share some behind-the-scenes secrets:. Walking takes practice. There's a reason – beyond long legs – that models look so mesmerizing when they walk that catwalk. They walk flawlessly because they take modeling classes where they work on posture (drop the shoulders, align your spine), perfect the positioning of arms and feet, find their optimal stride length, and simply get accustomed to balancing in... While I'm not saying the rest of us need to devote that kind of attention to this everyday act, I do think that it's worth knowing that walking with purpose and poise is a skill you can cultivate if you give it a little thought. It can't hurt to take a look in the mirror and see if your walk is working for you. A few adjustments, some practice in your trickier shoes and a little awareness could give you the kind of presence that works to your advantage – even off a runway. The best walk is a glide. If you watch models walk (and I did, for three hours), they take long strides that form an almost perfect straight line by placing one foot directly out in front of the other. They walk with their spines aligned so there's very little curving. shoulders are above hip bones, not thrust back. (Which, as we've mentioned before, it isn't. So in addition to asking models to show us their haughty, New York-style walk, we also ask them to do an energetic, "personality" walk so we can look for models who have amazing eye contact, expressions and the ability to connect with us – and... When a model has that kind of presence and personality, she's a keeper.
