During the years of the Indian uprisings in the West, Elizabeth Burt followed her husband, Major Andrew Burt, from one lonely outpost to another, with their three small children, a crate of chickens, and a cow in tow. Indians, Infants, and Infantry, based largely on a 1912 manuscript Mrs. Burt derived from now-lost letters and diaries, provides an intimate glimpse of life at Forts Kearney, Bridger, Laramie, and C.F. Smith from the 1860s through the 1890s. Historical events do not dwarf but only heighten the half-century love affair of a remarkable woman and a soldier whose distinguished career stretched from the Civil to the Spanish-American war. In addition to Mrs. Burt's manuscripts, Merrill J. Mattes drew on army records and other primary sources.

Finalist for the 2014 Weber-Clements Book Prize for the Best Non-fiction Book on Southwestern AmericaIn popular culture, Wyatt Earp is the hero of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, and a beacon of rough cowboy justice in the tumultuous American West. The subject of dozens of films, he has been invoked in battles against organized crime (in the 1930s), communism (in the 1950s), and al-Qaeda (after 2001).Yet as the historian Andrew C. Isenberg reveals in Wyatt Earp: A Vigilante Life, the Hollywood Earp is largely a fiction-one created by none other than Earp himself. The lawman played on-screen by Henry Fonda and Burt Lancaster is stubbornly duty-bound; in actuality, Earp led a life of impulsive lawbreaking and shifting identities. When he wasn't wearing a badge, he was variously a thief, a brothel bouncer, a gambler, and a confidence man. As Isenberg writes, "He donned and shucked off roles readily, whipsawing between lawman and lawbreaker, and pursued his changing ambitions recklessly, with little thought to the cost to himself, and still less thought to the cost, even the deadly cost, to others."By 1900, Earp's misdeeds had caught up with him: his involvement as a referee in a fixed heavyweight prizefight brought him national notoriety as a scoundrel. Stung by the press, Earp set out to rebuild his reputation. He spent his last decades in Los Angeles, where he befriended Western silent film actors and directors. Having tried and failed over the course of his life to invent a better future for himself, in the end he invented a better past. Isenberg argues that even though Earp, who died in 1929, did not live to see it, Hollywood's embrace of him as a paragon of law and order was his greatest confidence game of all.A searching account of the man and his enduring legend, and a book about our national fascination with extrajudicial violence, Wyatt Earp: A Vigilante Life is
Rangers opened the scoring in the fifth minute, Jamie Barjonas broke forward and passed to Liam Burt wide on the right who moved the ball on to Josh Jeffries on the right hand angle of the box and he gave Tim Hughes no chance as he fired across... A good move led to Rangers second goal on seventeen minutes, it started with Scott Gray who moved the ball forward to Jamie Barjonas on the left, he passed inside to Jordan Thompson and his pass sent Ryan Hardie racing clear through the inside... Just over five minutes later a free-kick from the left was headed from the Stirling box but only as far as Jordan Thompson who’s shot was powerful but straight at Tim Hughes. With twenty minutes of the half remaining Josh Jeffries won the ball on the edge of the box just right of centre and he sent another unstoppable shot past Tim Hughes and into the net via the underside of the bar. The game had almost reached the half hour mark when Tim Hughes dived to his left to parry Jordan Thompson’s shot from the edge of the box. Zak Rudden collected and made his way along the right hand byline, his shot was blocked but Liam Burt was on hand to net from close range. The away side had an early chance after the break when Chris Geddes and Lewis Bonar exchanged passes on the right hand angle of the box and the former’s shot was saved low to his right by Robbie McCrorie. On the hour Josh Jeffries fed Liam Burt wide on the left and he cut inside before going for goal which Tim Hughes saved at his near post. With eighteen minutes remaining Josh Jeffries ball over the top of the defence allowed Zak Rudden to break into the left side of the box but again Tim Hughes made the save. A couple of minutes later Scott Gray passed to Andy Dallas inside the penalty area, the linesmen appeared to flag for offside but put his flag down as the Rangers striker was bundled over inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. With ten minutes remaining Ross McCrorie passed to Josh Jeffries on the right, he cut inside and his shot saw Tim Hughes produce a fine save diving high to his right to push the ball wide. Three minutes later following another Rangers attack the ball broke for Andy Dallas on the left hand angle of the box with Tim Hughes saving at his near post. Ross Lyon passed to Zak Rudden who took on Ross Kellock on the right and broke into the penalty area with Tim Hughes saving bravely at the striker’s feet. Ross Lyon was again the creator hitting the right hand byline, his cross was eventually gathered by Andy Dallas beyond the far post, his shot back across goal looked netbound until a deflection took it just wide.
