Smooth Groove

Smooth Groove

(Buy.com (dba Rakuten.com Shopping))

Price: $9.31

Personnel: Ray Crawford (guitar), Cecil Payne (baritone saxophone), Johnny Coles (trumpet), Junior Mance (piano), Ben Tucker (bass), Frankie Dunlop (drums). Recorded at Nola Penthouse Sound Studios, New York, January 6 & February 10, 1961. Includes liner notes by Alan Bates and Mark Weber. Guitarist Ray Crawford, best known for his associations with pianist Ahmad Jamal and organist Jimmy Smith, only led one session in his early years. Because the Candid label soon went bankrupt, the set went unreleased altogether until this 1988 CD. Comprised of five Crawford originals, the session finds the guitarist playing fairly advanced hard bop with trumpeter Johnny Coles, baritonist Cecil Payne (in top form), pianist Junior Mance, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Frankie Dunlop. Everyone sounds fine, making one regret that this set fell between the cracks for so many years. ~ Scott Yanow

Six Feet Under: The Complete Fifth Se

Six Feet Under: The Complete Fifth Se

(Buy.com (dba Rakuten.com Shopping))

Price: $21.14

Featuring stellar writing and directing, SIX FEET UNDER boasts an outstanding ensemble cast featuring Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall, Frances Conroy, Lauren Ambrose, Rachel Griffiths, Freddy Rodriguez, Matthew St. Patrick, Patricia Clarkson, Kathy Bates, and many others. Created by Alan Ball (the screenwriter behind the Oscar-winning 1999 film AMERICAN BEAUTY), the HBO series could arguably have been called the best show on television during its five-season run. Gaining loyal fans with its complex and involving characters (many of the show's stars came from theatre backgrounds), the series also stood out for its serious themes, its dark humor, and Ball's use of surrealist imagery. The show focuses on a dynamic Los Angeles family that operates a funeral home in the lower levels of the house where they live. When the patriarch of the family dies (in the first episode), his sons are left to run the business, their shared responsibilities producing a constant tension. While the plot often veers from this premise, it always eventually makes its way back to the Fisher and Sons Funeral Home (later changed to Fisher and Diaz when Federico becomes a partner). Each week, the story behind each of their clients serves to distract the Fisher brothers from what's going on in their own tumultuous lives and those of their multigenerational family members. The fifth and final season is the show's most dramatic, exploring issues of marriage, adultery, adoption, divorce, and death. As some characters move forward in their lives, others encounter setbacks and get thrown off course. While fans of the show found the series' end hard to accept, SIX FEET UNDER attempted in its last (widely interpreted) five minutes to provide viewers with some sense of closure to the intense, real, funny, and compelling family saga that was the Fishers' lives.

Emblematic Monsters

In early modern Europe, monstrous births were significant events that were seen alive by many people, and dissected, embalmed and collected after death.Emblematic Monsters is a social history of monstrous births as seen through popular print, scholarly books and the proceedings of learned societies. Representations of monsters are considered in the context of their roles as wonders and emblems, and studies of the anatomy of monsters are discussed along with contemporary theories of their origin. By approaching accounts of monstrous births not only as a literary form but also as descriptions of real-life cases, similarities between the pre-scientific recording of wonders and the scientific case report can be explored. Most impressively, A.W. Bates draws upon his own experience of...

Wendy the Whale

This warm and intriguing story is about Gwendolyn Able, a severely handicapped girl, and her mother. Abandoned by the child's father they overcame the trials and difficulties of her affliction using the power of unstinted and unqualified love. Along the pathway to adulthood they affected the lives of those with whom they came in contact: teachers, coaches and team-mates. It is the author's wish that this tale will help the more fortunate to understand and sympathize with the mentally handicapped, and possibly lend hope to those who must meet similar challenges.
