The drama of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson is the foundational story of Americacourage, loyalty, hope, fanaticism, greatness, failure, forgiveness, love. An Essential American Friendship is the story of the greatest friendship in American history and the revolutionary times in which it was made, ruined, and finally renewed. In the wake of Washington?s retirement, longtime friends Thomas Jefferson and John Adams came to represent the opposing political forces struggling to shape America?s future. Adams?s victory in the presidential election of 1796 brought Jefferson into his administrationbut as an unlikely and deeply conflicted vice president. The bloody Republican revolution in France finally brought their political differences to a bitter pitch. In Mallock?s take on this fascinating period, French foreign policy and revolutionary developmentsfrom the fall of the Bastille to the fall of the Jacobins and the rise of Napoleonform a disturbing and illuminating counterpoint to events, controversies, individuals, and relationships in Philadelphia and Washington. Many important and fascinating people appear in the book, including Thomas Paine, Camille Desmoulins, Dr. Benjamin Rush, Tobias Lear, Talleyrand, Robespierre, Danton, Saint-Just, Abigail Adams, Lafayette, James Madison, John Quincy Adams, Dr. Joseph Priestley, Samuel Adams, Philip Mazzei, John Marshall, Alexander Hamilton, and Edward Coles. They are brought to life by Mallock?s insightful analysis and clear and lively writing. An Essential American Friendship is a thoroughly researched and tautly written modern history. When the most important thing is at stake, almost anything can be justified.

Connecting with Our Founding Leaders

We transform English-speaking, low-literate adults, who live in Salt Lake or Davis Counties in Utah, into skilled, passionate, habitual, critical readers, writers, and mathematicians. We also educate community volunteers to work one-on-one or in group settings with these adult learners. For more information, see www. LiteracyActionCenter. To get help or donate time, resources, or financial support, please call 801/265-9081. In fact, about 1/4 of the learners struggled reading words like "the. " They were partnered however with learners who could read the words. Another member of each group had some computer skills. A (volunteer) tutor also teamed up with the groups to help with harder words and digging information out of the text. The groups had to work together to complete the task. Absolutely. Members in some groups even shared what they learned with other groups when they found that their leaders connected in some way. Simple answer - the group asked to read and learn about these individuals. Individually, this group has never used printed texts to answer questions. They lack experience posing and researching questions. These group activities allow these adults to learn much more than just decoding and interpreting words. Our charge is to ensure that all learners are college-career ready when they leave us to move on to the next phase of their lives. This means our learners need to build their abilities to the point where they can read complex informational texts, analyze and synthesize evidence in texts, and build and express their knowledge by writing expository texts

Jackson-Square - Jamaica Plain MA - Centre St Bridge c1960
From the Jamaica Plain Historical Society. "Jackson Square - Origin of the Name" By Richard Heath STONY BROOK divided Roxbury into east and west for over 250 years. During that time the principle highway between the business and civic district of Dudley Square and the village center of Jamaica Plain was Centre Street. Since at least 1662 Centre St crossed Stony Brook over a wooden plank bridge near Heath Lane (a cart path to the Heath Farm; in 1825 it became Heath Street). That junction was called Central Bridge but most people until the turn of the 20th century called it Hog’s Bridge.[i] That intersection is today known as Jackson Square, a familiar crossroads at Columbus Ave. and Centre Street, but no public record has been found to determine who the Square was named after. Hog’s Bridge was used up to end of the 19th century so it is a 20th century appellation. It may be that the Square was named for General Henry Jackson, one of the three Revolutionary War...
