Moorpark city manager: 'I've enjoyed helping shape a community' After more than three decades with the city, Moorpark's city manager announced Monday night he plans to retire in a letter to city leaders. com/story/news/2017/08/29/longtime-moorpark-city-manager-set-retire/612251001/ After more than three decades with the city, Moorpark's city manager announced his plans to retire next year in a letter to city leaders sent on Monday evening. Steve Kueny, 65, will depart from his position in March, he said Tuesday morning. He marked his 33rd anniversary as the city manager on July 16 and planned to announce his retirement after that date. "My wife wanted me to retire last year," he said. In his final six months, Kueny will oversee the development agreements for multiple residential projects in Moorpark totaling more than 500 units, 75 of which are planned to be used for affordable housing. "I think I've got a good feel for the development agreements, and I think I'm in the best position to bring those to consideration," he said. "I've enjoyed helping shape a community, but it comes to an end," he said. Kueny said he looks forward to spending more time with his family, including his wife, Yolanda Kueny, and their 15-year-old son, Aaron, and having "more time for the things I don't now. It's time for someone else to take on the responsibilities, he said. "I won't miss the night meetings," the city manager said. Kueny, a southern California native, attended CSU Los Angeles, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in political science in 1973 and a master's in public administration in 1975. In 1976, he became an assistant city manager for the city of Walnut... According to the 65-year-old, he was only the fourth permanent city employee. "A year from now, that's all I'll be is a trivia question," he said. Through his more than 30 years of work in Moorpark, Kueny oversaw much of the commercial, residential and recreational development of the city, including the construction of Arroyo Vista Park, a project Kueny sees as one of his biggest... I think we were able to develop Arroyo Vista into something great for people, he said. The park, nestled below what is now Moorpark High School on Tierra Rejada Road, had previously been 65 acres of farmland with no access, Kueny said. "Now, look what it is. We put 10,000 people in there for July 3rd," he said. Councilman Dave Pollock said, "Moorpark grew up while Steve was city manager. When Kueny was first hired, Pollock said, Moorpark had a population of around 9,000. Now, the city is approaching a population of more than 37,000. Mike Sedell, a former city manager Simi Valley who worked with Kueny on various road and housing... "He has a soft voice but carries a big stick," Sedell said. He was always trying to get the most he could for his city, Sedell said. There were some who felt that Moorpark was asking too much, he said, adding that some developers could become frustrated with Kueny. The Moorpark City Council will begin the search for Kueny's successor within the next month.
