New Scotland Township

This rich pictorial history is the first to feature the entire township of New Scotland. Located west-southwest of the city of Albany, the township covers a large area in the center of Albany County. The earliest European settlers arrived in the mid-1600s and over the next 150 years, they were followed by immigrants from Holland, Scotland, England, and other countries. New Scotland Township contains photographs dating from 1840 to 1980, including dozens of formerly unpublished ones. Both the photographs and captions contain an amazing amount of detail that creates a vivid account of town life over the course of more than a century. The book celebrates the people, their homes and occupations, as well as the community's schools, churches, and means of transportation. It explores the...

Tourism panel aims to showcase area beyond Appomattox Court House National Historical Park - Lynchburg News and Advance

Appomattox Court House National Historical Park draws thousands of visitors to Appomattox every year, but many quickly move on after spending a few hours touring the grounds where the Confederates surrendered to Union forces. About a month ago, several businesses and organizations in the county partnered together to create the Appomattox Tourism Advisory Committee to encourage visitors to consider Appomattox a destination. “The average tourist goes to the national park and keeps going, and they miss all of this other great stuff that we have to do,” said Sue Cochrane, president of the Appomattox 1865 Foundation. “We all have taken the stance that Appomattox should be a destination as opposed to a pass through. Made up of the Museum of the Confederacy, Wolfbane Productions, the Appomattox Inn & Suites, The Appomattox 1865 Foundation, the Babcock House, and the Appomattox County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, the committee is working to... Called “Experience Appomattox,” the campaign will consist of a website highlighting area attractions, video spots advertising the county and packaged deals where visitors can purchase tickets to multiple attractions and a stay at the Appomattox... The first package that will be marketed through the program is centered on the 152nd anniversary of the surrender at Appomattox. The group hopes to create more vacation packages that vary based on interests and time of year, Cochrane said. Phase one of the project involves the launching of the website and the filming of three different video spots. In order to move forward with more projects, the committee is applying for a marketing grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation. Appomattox Town Council contributed $1,500 toward the project and is contributing a letter of support in the application for the grant from VTC. “Because we are a small rural community, we don’t have the tourism resources larger communities have,” said Anne Dixon, Director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism for Appomattox County. “When you’re in a small town, you have limited resources for things like this. It helps when everyone partners together to make big things happen.
