Fort Atkinson has been called the “top historical spot in Nebraska,” the “SAC of 1820,” and “America’s most important Western outpost.” Once the country’s largest fortress beyond the Missouri River, its garrison protected America’s interests in the burgeoning fur trade, provided a base camp for explorations, played host to famous frontiersmen, and was the site where numerous treaties were signed. But by 1961, Fort Atkinson was endangered. The fort’s buildings had vanished over 100 years before. Decades of farming on the land had nearly erased its footprint. A housing development threatened to obliterate the site forever. There was only a marker with a flagpole raised in 1927 by the Daughters of the American Revolution—a lonely object in the midst of an empty plain. This book tells the...
Fort Atkinson in Jefferson County is rich with Native American history. Over time, it served as a strategic location for agriculture, trade, business, tourism, and military strategy, which all combine to tell a fascinating story about early life in Wisconsin. Comparing the town's past to its present is a testament to its founders and their vision, strength, accomplishments, commitment, and sense of community, which are still realized today. The Fort Atkinson Historical Society and the 2010-2011 Project LEAD Team partnered to create this collection.
Jefferson pitcher Ian Drays held Fort Atkinson to just two hits on the night, striking out eight and walking two. Things were all tied up 1-1 after the fourth inning, and after Fort Atkinson scored just one run in an inning where they loaded the bases. Fort pitcher Austin Paul allowed back-to-back singles and loaded the bases to bring up Zack Peterson, who ripped a two RBI double to break the deadlock. Jefferson wasn’t done as a sac-fly from Evan Anfang scored Laesch at third and then a Ryan Brost double brought home Peterson to make it 5-1. An error at short would score another run as Drays would be credited with an RBI. After Drays set down Fort 1-2-3 in the fifth, Garrett Fairfield led off the inning reaching on an error, and Fort reliever Dane Sebranek walked Laesch to put runners on. A wild pitch and passed ball ended with Fairfield scoring a run and then an... On the next pitch to Anfang, he drilled a two-run home run that had the Jefferson bench exploding to make it 10-1. Two errors would then score Brost to make it 11-1. Drays had no problem in the top of the seventh, getting two ground balls and a... Fort’s best chance to break the door open came in the fourth when they scored their run. With Sebranek moving to third on the play, Josh Bilau walked to put runners on the corners and Jacob Kostroski drove a run home with a single that tied the game 1-1. With two outs Cody Zahn would walk and load the bags but Drays got a big... Jefferson scored its first run in the top of the that inning, as Drays hit a one-out triple and was driven home by a Chris DeKrey ground out. Fort’s other hit came from Zahn with two outs in the second. Fort Atkinson returns to action on Thursday with a game at Watertown at 7:30 p. m. while Jefferson will host Whitewater at 5:15 p. m.
