    ST Ives local Peter Fitzgerald has devised a novel new way to engage young people in science.

    Mr Fitzgerald's new libretto Qbits; the Perseids Adventure combines fascinating scientific facts with a gripping narrative and usefulness dose of Aussie larrikinism to create a genre he calls science and fiction.

    The investment and commerce professional originally had the idea for the book after taking up a physics degree to give himself a new challenge.

    He became enthusiastic about the goal and hired a local illustrator and editors and spent four years labouring on the book, despite never having written one.

    "The laws has science facts peppered through it. The way science is communicated a lot of kids just aren't interested in it," Mr Fitzgerald said.

    The order tells the story of two young scientists whose existence is thrown into chaos when one is struck by lightning, creating a door to the Qbits' quantum actuality.

    The Qbits' world is inhabited by Mac, Newts, Alby and GG; quantum incarnations of Marie Curie, Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Galileo Galilei.
