Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling endorses GOP leaders in Campbell Co., Bedford Co.
LYNCHBURG - Contests are brewing for leadership at the grassroots level of the Republican Party in Campbell and Bedford counties, and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling has endorsed contenders in both localities.
The job they’re seeking is called “unit chairman,” and the current leaders in both Bedford and Campbell said the title doesn’t carry much prestige.
Both Gene Smith in Campbell County and Kevin Corwin in Bedford said the job is for people who “work in the trenches” and coax Republican volunteers to distribute literature, put up road signs and talk up the party’s nominees.
Unit leaders “set the tone for the volunteer effort in their county” and how conservative it will be, said Corwin, the outgoing unit chairman.
Bolling is backing Smith, who is seeking another term as the Campbell chairman, in a mass meeting that will be held Thursday night in Rustburg. The opposing candidate is Will Kirk, a political newcomer.
