County employee reassigned for baseball inquiry Sarasota Herald-Tribune
While pulling community services director Larry Arnold away from baseball discussions and decisions, County Administrator Jim Ley also ordered an outside review of how baseball contracts were awarded.
Ley followed up with a note to county commissioners: "While the matters raised require a fair evaluation, if what I have seen in bits and pieces is true then I am very disappointed and sad that the judgment or actions of one might cast a patina of doubt on the entire endeavor."
The review of contract awards will be conducted by auditors from the office of Karen Rushing, Clerk of the Circuit Court.
"We will meet next week and initiate the review," Ley wrote. "I have made it clear that aside from the interviews they might undertake, they are doing this work solely for me and are to report their results directly to me."
Arnold was the county's point of contact with the Orioles and leader of staff involved with the renovation of Ed Smith Stadium . His reassignment comes a week after the county opened bidding for another key spring training contract. The search for a firm to act as the construction manager for the $25 million job started on April 14. Bids are due next month.
