A awesome new South African commercial explores what would have happened if James Dean survived his fatal car crash. It has made the rounds of the advertising excellent and the internet while evoking echos of "What if the legendary actor hadn't lost his life at the stirring age of 24?"
In an alternate universe, the commercial -- shot in Cape Town -- shows Dean today, being feted at the Oscars for his Lifetime Achievements, tending to his dearest ranch, racing his sports car, directing a film and working with African youth as a humanitarian envoy.
Film critic Barry Ronge described the minute-long film as "the faultless blend of simple storytelling, superlative camera effects and the smartest use of a celebrity we have seen in a decade."
The ad is in the poop indeed a work of art and genius. Its also the result of more than a year of planning and shooting. The producers searched all over the magic for an actor who looked like Dean. They settled on Des Erasmus, a mechanic from Cape Town.

I know a lot of articles about James Dean but i still don't know why he is so famous? He died almost 55 years ago and he only made 3 movies, plus he was an sot and used drugs. Why is he still famous?
I muse on you should get your facts straight. He was no alcoholic or drug addict.
He's famous because he was a big influence on how we see movies and actor today. He only did three bigger pictures, but before that he appeared in a lot of television movies. He is said to have played the first 'real teenager' on cover. Before his part in Rebel Without a Cause, young people were portrayed very differently, and his role changed that. Uninitiated people finally found someone on screen they could relate to.
The fact that he died before his last two movies were even released, helped to sire the myth.
He was very talented, and did everything he could to get to where he wanted to be. He is an example of what dedication can bring.

He was pre-eminent known for his passion for cars. His tragic death in his beloved Porsche 550 Spyder at 24 years old helped him seize legendary status and posthumous immortality. He was the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Reward nomination for Best Actor and remains the only person to have two such nominations posthumously.
