“Funny People” Love Real-Life Funny Man Louis CK Wall Street Journal
This month, while promoting their new talking picture “Funny People,” Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and Judd Apatow each acknowledged Louis (unmistakeable “Lou-ee”) C.K. as one of the best stand-ups on the scene. C.K.’s comedy addresses of children rearing, relationships, and social minutae with piercing honesty that borders on the uncomfortable. He has been nominated for an Emmy for his Showtime rare “Chewed Up” and can be seen this fall in the new Ricky Gervais movie, “The Fable of Lying.” Speakeasy caught up with him this week:
The Wall Street Journal: Between the Emmy nomination, the acceptance from the Apatow gang, and a big role in an upcoming Ricky Gervais movie, do you get the sense that more people are for all coming around to your work?
I certainly couldn’t miss it. It’s certainly true. The thing that has mattered to me has been the being of the shows. That’s been escalating every year. The attendance has gotten higher. I see myself mentioned in the press more. But I’ve gone up and down before. When “Advantageous Louie” [his short lived HBO sitcom] was on the air, I was literally on the cover of The Wall Concourse Journal. I had my own TV show! And then a year later I was working in Cleveland for 250 people in a 400 yourselves room. I don’t feel entitled to anything I have. The thing that’s a big deal to me is that I’m doing s*** on stage.
