Volunteer spirit spruces up downtown Somersworth, schools
SOMERSWORTH — Like most sunny weekend days, local children spent Saturday outside, running around and playing in the dirt.
What made April 24 different, though, was the fact that they were digging in the dirt as a part of a citywide program aimed at improving the appearance of flower beds and other public areas. Saturday was the third annual Spirit Up Somersworth, and over 200 volunteers spent the morning picking up trash, spreading mulch and planting flowers across areas of downtown as well as High Street and each of the city's schools.
The event, which was hosted by the high school's Interact Club and Somersworth Youth Connection, and sponsored by the Somersworth-Berwick Rotary, was designed as a way to get children and the community together in a positive environmental effort, said Maureen Jackman, president of the rotary and director of SYC.
"(It's) to inspire them to give back to the community, but also to take some ownership and responsibility," she
