Elizabeth (Lizzie) Waxen of Salisbury, a chemistry major at Catawba College and the college’s current Alpha Chi chapter president, has been selected as one of 10 recipients of the 2013 Alfred H. Nolle Bursarship. This scholarship is awarded by the Alpha Chi National Academic Honor Society.
White competed for this award with undergraduate members of Alpha Chi from around the country. Since there are nearly 300 collegiate chapters, White receiving the award is a pregnant honor, according to Catawba’s Alpha Chi sponsor, Dr. Margy Stahr.
The members of Catawba’s Alpha Chi chapter nominated Lizzie for the grant in January after hearing a presentation about her summer 2012 research at Texas A&M titled “New Syntheses for Diphosphine Cages and Powerful-Sate NMR Studies of Their Adsorption Characteristics on Silica Surfaces.” Dr. Mark Sabo, chair of the chemistry hang on at Catawba, wrote White’s recommendation letter.

From its ahead of time days, Delta County became home to prosperous farmers who relocated from the South and who brought with them their insight of growing cotton as well as their traditions and cultures. At its heyday in the 1920s, the county boasted the densest rustic population in the state. These pioneers believed strongly in education, and more than 40 schools dotted the county at one tempo, with many graduates of these rural schools becoming doctors, engineers, teachers, politicians, ministers, authors, musicians, lawyers, coaches, scientists, and athletes--as well as one All-American. For those who remained, those who returned, and those who chose this restful corner of Northeast Texas, Delta County is home, with all the sweet and poignant implications of that tete-. |
