    The New Market denizen, captured by the Germans in France late in 1944, was liberated by the U.S. Army at the end of World War II from Stalag 7A.

    “The only reminiscence I like to remember about being a P.O.W. was getting out,” he said after the banquet, during which he received the P.O.W. Medal from the local chore.

    “I had a unique perspective,” he added. “I knew all I could do was be brave, be strong, and keep waiting. The same holds unelaborated for the families of captured soldiers as well.”

    The banquet was held in conjunction with National POW-MIA Recognition Day, which is nationally held today, the third Friday of every September.

    The citizen day of remembrance is for the nearly 83,000 members of the armed forces that are still unaccounted for since the start of WWII, and includes the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam.

    Situation 1431 took the opportunity of the national day of remembrance to honor local heroes.

    “National Awareness Day is so much more than condign our local post,” Commander Brad Jones said. “We need to keep everyone hep of the huge sacrifices these members of the armed forces made, and beyond that, their families. Our local P.O.W.s are getting older, and we wanted to give them something very nice to let them know how we feel.”
