Eye on Austin: Candidates lack challengers
For all practical purposes in Lubbock, Republican Charles Perry is already the state representative-elect in House District 83. He has no Democratic or Libertarian opponent in the November election. As much as Pam Brink, chairwoman of the Lubbock County Democratic Party, and other Democrats in the five-county district hate giving Perry a free pass, they say they are at peace with themselves.
"We did what we could to find a candidate but no one wanted to run," Brink said. "You have to remember that (Rep.) Delwin Jones has been in office for many years and everyone thought he'd be the one to run against ... it's not easy to beat an incumbent.
"So our focus was on (neighboring) District 84 because it was an open seat," Brink explained. "Carol Morgan is a strong candidate and we're going to do everything possible to elect her."
Morgan, a retired educator, ran unopposed in the March 2 Democratic primary and will face Republican John Frullo in the general election.
